Show hidden files, folders and extension in Windows
Description

When searching or browsing in Windows Explorer, some files and folders may be hidden.

The following steps help you show hidden files and folders.

Cause

Windows 11

  1. Press the Windows key  + E.
  2. Click View, then hover over Show click Options.
  3. Then click Hidden items.
  4. Check your settings are as follows:
    Advanced settings Check box
    Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives Clear
    Show hidden files, folders, and drives Select
    Hide extensions for known file types Clear
    Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) Clear - You may get a warning message when you clear this check box - click Yes to this warning.

     

  5. Click Apply then click OK.

Windows 10

  1. Press the Windows key  + E.
  2. Click View, then click Options.
  3. Click Change folder and search options.
  4. Click the View tab.
  5. Check your settings are as follows:
    Advanced settings Check box
    Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives Clear
    Show hidden files, folders, and drives Select
    Hide extensions for known file types Clear
    Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) Clear -

    You may get a warning message when you clear this check box - click Yes to this warning.

  6. Click Apply then click OK.
